Calem Maloney and Darren Matthews won the island’s first-ever ‘Arrive & Drive’ Karting Enduro at Bushy Park on Saturday (September 27). After 109 laps, six changes of lead and two-and-a-half hours of racing, they crossed the just 45 seconds ahead of Mark Thompson and his nephew Blake in the Cole Clarke Racing (CCR) Three Hours.
A cross-section of experience across the 16 teams included well-known island names such as former Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Champion Maloney and rally driver Mark Thompson through regular participants in the facility’s Karting Experiences to relative novices. Racing identical Honda-powered Sodi RT8 karts, however, created a level playing field and competition was intense through the field.
CCR boss Andy Clarke said: “The historic three-hour race was a testament to the hard work and support of the people at Bushy Park. Despite the challenging day, we’ve learned valuable lessons and look forward to developing them in the next event. The feedback we’ve received from many drivers has been overwhelmingly positive. They described the event as a success and are eagerly looking forward to the next event in November.”
. While it was mandatory for each driver to complete three flying laps during the half-hour Practice, just one was needed for the shorter Qualifying session. More familiar with the 1.31-kilometre layout than others, as it had been used for BKA Championship round four, Maloney was quickest, by just five-hundredths from Mark-Anthony Hinkson & Shaquille Walcott. Third, another four-tenths adrift, were Conrad and Ian Brits, with Jacob Mustor & Jayden Thompson completing the top four.
The race got under way at 2.15pm after some minor delays for final kart preparation, with the Pit Lane and the Open-Air Suites buzzing with cheering families and friends, supporting their chosen teams. The delay resulted in a Stewards decision communicated to all participants mid-way through the race to cut the event short by 30 minutes on safety grounds to avoid running into darkness.
With 16 teams participating, the first half-hour saw some lively action ahead of the first round of driver change pit-stops, which naturally spread the field out more. Maloney & Matthews were the early leaders, with Blake and Mark Thompson assuming the lead when they pitted to change. But the Thompsons led for only a handful of laps before their own pit-stop handed the lead to Hinkson & Walcott.
They led for approaching 20 laps before pitting again, with the Thompsons returning to the head of the field briefly and then, after another stop shortly after, to hold the lead for around 40 laps. Just after the two-hour mark and with a lead of around 17secs, they took their last of the five mandatory pitstops, Maloney & Matthews taking over to cross the line just over 45 seconds ahead, an impressively close margin.
Despite having not led at any stage, a consistent performance from Daniel Small and Sebastien Thompson was rewarded with third place just two laps down and just over 70secs ahead of Mustor & Thompson. Ten of the 16 teams finished, Hinkson & Walcott the highest-profile retirement towards the end of the second hour while lying fourth.
The next CCR event is on November 15, which organisers hope will run to the planned Six Hours, with two more next year ahead of the region’s first-ever round-the-clock motor race, the 24 Hours of Barbados, scheduled for October 2026. Clarke added: “We welcome teams and drivers of all abilities to participate. For more details, visit the Cole Clarke Racing website or Bushy Park.”
