The Home Of Rum

It is not widely recognized that Barbados is the birthplace of rum, invented in the mid-17th century. According to historical accounts, following the success of sugarcane cultivation, barrels were not properly cleaned at the end of one season. When workers returned to clean and prepare for the next season, they noticed a sweet aroma emanating from the barrels. In a quintessential act of curiosity, someone tasted the sweet-smelling liquid from the barrel, leading to the creation of rum.
Barbados is celebrated for producing high-quality rum, with several renowned brands originating from the island, including Mount Gay, Bumbu, Foursquare, Doorly’s, and Cockspur. Mount Gay, in particular, has a rich history, with the oldest surviving deed for the company dating back to 1703. Other notable Barbadian rums include Kaniche, Old Brigand, St. Nicholas Abbey, and Mount Gilboa.
